Our favorite state celebrated a birthday on Saturday. That’s
right ladies and gentlemen, the Great Lake State, Michigan joined the Union as
the 26th state on January 26, 1837 when President Andrew Jackson
signed his John Hancock.
How to celebrate such an occasion? Well, we at Michigan Expats
at here to help. We’ve shared ideas on how to throw a Michigan
themed party before – while it’s late for the birthday, it’s always a great
theme party idea.
How’d I celebrate Michigan’s birthday? Well, I’m back in
Michigan, so I decided to participate in one of the six Tweetup birthday
celebrations hosted by Awesome Mitten
across the state including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Traverse
City, and Marquette.

The events were a part of a fun campaign by Awesome Mitten
to promote what we love about Michigan through celebrating the birthday. They
also hosted a Michigan birthday bake-off, collected warm weather clothing items
for those in need through local organizations, and sponsored the hashtag #176YearsofAwesome
on Twitter for Michiganders to share what it is they think makes Michigan
awesome (like not being Ohio).
I attended the Tweetup at The Mitten Brewing Company in Grand
Rapids a.k.a. “Beer City, U.S.A.”, so naturally it had to be at a brewery.
Beyond beer and delicious pizza, Awesome Mitten had dry
erase boards for people to write their own birthday card to Michigan and share
it on Twitter – check them out at #176YearsofAwesome.
They word spread as the brewery was standing room only all
afternoon and Awesome Mitten collected dozens of hats, gloves, and jackets at
Mitten Brewing Co. for In The Image to
provide to those in need.
As a bonus, Awesome Mitten also had door prizes from MichiganAwesome.org, The Mitten
Brewing Co., and other local businesses. I’m proud to say I came away with
another Michigan Awesome t-shirt (“Lake Effective”) to go along with the “Smitten
with the Mitten” shirt I wore to the event.
Overall, it was a fun afternoon. It was awesome to meet
fellow Michigan bloggers, Kristen from Awesome Mitten and Bryan from Mitten Brew, and look forward to seeing them
around Grand Rapids and other Michigan themed events across the Mitten.
And yes, the pizza and beer were excellent. The Mitten makes
coal fired flat bread artisan pizzas, and I went with the Pesto Chicken with
red onions and artichoke hearts (I love artichoke hearts on pizza). I look
forward to future visits to try the Thai and Chicken BBQ pizzas, especially now
receive 10% off food with my new membership card from I’m a Beer Hound. In fact, I’m
planning to go back this Thursday for a Grand Rapids Young Professionals event,
so I may have to finally devote a full post to a comprehensive review.
I hope your Michigan birthday also went well. Now that you’ve
read all of our post, please take the time to check out the other Michigan blogs
and websites I’ve linked to above.
Happy Birthday, Michigan, "the most recognizable destination from space."
